Arana Jr. isn't in the championship battle himself, but contenders Jerry Savoie, Eddie Krawiec and Andrew Hines may have to get around Arana if they want to win the 2016 title.
But Arana Jr. isn't worried about that in the slightest. He wants to get a victory for himself, his race team and his sponsors.
"I think Jerry and I should be on opposite sides of the ladder, but I'm not even looking at that," Arana Jr. said. "I want to win this race, too, and whatever happens, happens."
Arana Jr. made a top qualifying run of 6.856 seconds at 195.51 mph and will square off with Freddie Camarena in the first round. Camarena qualified No. 14 with a run of 6.916 seconds at 195.39 mph. No. 2 qualifier Krawiec is on Arana's side of the ladder, but that potential matchup wouldn't happen until the semifinals. Arana Jr., too, is simply focused on one round at a time.
The No. 3 qualifying spot is Arana Jr.'s best since Brainerd, where he was No. 3 and raced to the semifinals. He's confident in his bike for Sunday.
"I really learned a lot this year as far as tuning the bike," Arana Jr. said. "Unfortunately we are a little down on power from what we have had in previous years, so it made me learn to the tune the bike better to try to get everything out of the bike and go as fast as we can and compete. I feel like it has made me a better driver and a better tuner.
"I'm just excited for tomorrow. We still have one more race and I'm not giving up until it's over. I'm looking forward to next year from everything I learned this year and hopefully we fix the power issues and go from there."
